Workforce Development Program
Working from our headquarters located in Prescott, AZ, GEM Corps' Youth Conservation Crew (YCC) members participate in meaningful outdoor conservation projects alongside a variety of land management agencies, municipalities, and community partners across Yavapai County, Arizona. These partnerships provide unique and beneficial opportunities for all GEM Corps members to gain hand-on experience with experts in their fields under the guidance and mentorship of qualified professionals. Over the course of their AmeriCorps service term, members spend approximately 15 - 30 hours per week on service projects with 15 - 25 hours in the field on project work and 5-10 hours on professional development or career readiness training through a series of workshops, networking opportunities, online courses, certificate training, and more. Conservation projects may include: Trail construction and maintenance; non-native plant removal and disposal; re-vegetation of native plants; restoring and improving environmental and cultural resources; soil erosion prevention; constructing or maintaining fences; conducting wildlife, wilderness, and ecological surveys and assessments; fuels reduction and forest health maintenance; resource planning and technical data monitoring; and mapping, survey, and GIS projects. New Mexico Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) Program
The Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) program is tasked with identifying abandoned mine features throughout the state of New Mexico. The Staff Scientist will take lead for a team that identifies and records abandoned mine features on public lands across New Mexico. Mining features will be recorded using Global Positioning System (GPS) tools with ArcGIS software where data are then downloaded to a master ArcGIS file and processed in a geodatabase. Most survey work is done on foot in terrain that is often steep and extremely rugged. Team members will identify mining related features in a survey of a mineral districts where they methodically traverse the area searching for features such as adits, shafts, trenches, structures, prospects, and waste/ overburden dumps. At no point will the team members access or enter mining features while on project or be asked to participate in activities that exceed assumed safety risks associated with recreational access as prescribed in by the resource management plans of federal agencies with surface management responsibilities. All participants will be required to follow safety guidelines administered by OSHA and MSHA. This position is offered through GEM Corps where AmeriCorps members or Interns will work with an AML Team Leader under the direction of a GEM Staff Scientist as AML Technicians or Geographer's Assistants. The position may require the individual to travel and stay for prolonged periods in a field camp setting with limited access to resources or facilities on unimproved public land.

Natural Resources Intern

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carlsbad Field Office (CFO) is providing an opportunity for multiple individuals to help support natural resource conservation by documenting, categorizing, and inspecting oil- and gas-related operations to protect natural resources across BLM-administered lands in their respective resource areas. The selected applicant(s) will assist in conducting field examinations; assisting with the handling of files; conducting environmental analysis and review pertinent to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), New Mexico State Office (NMSO) is providing an opportunity for multiple individuals to help support their Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team. The selected applicant(s) will work closely with the BLM’s GIS staff serving as Mentors. This position will involve utilizing spatial data for a variety of projects that involve natural resource inventories, compiling and interpreting collected information, and record management.

Internship positions created in cooperation with the BLM for participants to work with the Phoenix District Office (PDO) Force Accounts to assist with Recreation and Deferred Maintenance projects for the Support Services Branch such as livestock and wildlife catchments or building / fixing fences, pipelines, and water storage facilities. Interns should posses some knowledge of construction practices and be able to work outdoors in intemperate environments.
