Project #1012 - GEM Corps Assistant Crew Leader
Full Time Member – 900 hours
Name of Program: GEM Corps
Position title: AmeriCorps Crew Leader

Member Duties: The AmeriCorps Crew Leader manages the day-to-day activities of 4-8 members. They serve as a role model, facilitator, educator, and encourage high standards for members involved in community-based service projects. 

Program Benefits: Upon successful completion of their term, members will be eligible to receive the following.
  • Living/ Housing Allowance stipend of $15,750 per 900-hour term of service delivered bi-weekly ($656.25/ Week)
  • Segal Education Award: $3,697.50
  • OSHA 30-hour General Industries Certification
  • Participation in personal and professional development opportunities
Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the U.S.
  • Must pass the National Sex Offender Public Registry and criminal history check, defined as no positive hits on the NSOPW and no history of violent offenses on the criminal history check

Work Schedule
: Assistant Crew Leaders are expected to serve 30-40-hour work weeks over the duration of their term, with 8-10 hours per week that may occur on weekends. Off days will fall on weekdays and may or may not be consecutive, depending on the program's schedule for any particular work week. AmeriCorps Crew Leaders will also participate in 2-8 hours per week of professional development as a part of their 30-40 hours per week. All AmeriCorps Members are required to take a 30-minute lunch break that does not count toward their total term hours.

Assistant Crew Leader Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Actively participate in technical and personal skills training, strive to further develop these skills in the field, and serve as a resource to mentor members.
  • Support training and educational activities by facilitating learning opportunities.
  • Coordinate and fully contribute to service projects to the best of their ability.
  • Must serve safely, effectively, and efficiently to ensure that habitat restoration projects are completed to the satisfaction of project hosts.
  • Foster a positive crew dynamic and help mitigate conflict among crew members.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members, program staff, and agency liaisons.
  • Organize crew gear, tools, and work supplies throughout the season.
To plan and fully contribute to service projects and provide a safe work environment, Team Leaders must: 
  • Meet with the crew to discuss daily plans and assign tasks, starting service on time.
  • Manage crew time and breaks throughout the day.
  • Plan daily project schedules to maximize productivity, safety, and crew efficiency, in consultation with agency staff.
  • Coordinate tools, equipment, and materials for service projects. Load vehicles properly. Do not leave needed tools behind, and do not leave tools at the service site.
  • Assist with on-site skills training for project-related work.
  • Meet with agency staff to review project expectations.
  • Monitor project progress and model a strong work ethic for crew members.
  • Complete a vehicle safety check each day
  • Complete weekly work reports
  • Comply with GEM Environmental and agency safety protocols during project work by ensuring crew members are using tools properly, wearing required PPE, and managing their personal health.
  • Conduct safety talks and review job and environmental hazards. 
 To communicate effectively with program staff and agency liaisons, Crew Leaders must:
  • Provide work and crew updates every week to the Program Manager
  • Communicate in an efficient and timely manner with agency staff and the Program Manager regarding project needs, schedule changes, vehicle incidents, and housing concerns.
  • Inform the Program Manager or the Executive Director of any interpersonal or work-related issues on the crew.
  • Receive feedback constructively regarding project outcomes and crew progress. 

In accordance with 45CFR 2520.65, AmeriCorps members may not perform prohibited service activities directly or indirectly by recruiting, training, or managing others for the primary purpose of engaging in the activities. Prohibited service activities are outlined in the Service Agreement section VII and the AmeriCorps member manual.
